	Dirk Kuyt has spoken of his determination to follow in the footsteps of Kop legend Robbie Fowler by becoming the club's number one marksman.
The Dutchman was a recognised 20 goal a season man during his Feyenoord days, and while his tally of 14 during his first year in England is more than respectable, he feels the Premier League has yet to see the best of Kuyt. "I'm sure I will get better this season," said the 27-year-old. "Last year I didn't have a full pre-season or know the rest of the lads or the club so well. Now I'm more settled and any difficulties when starting at a new club are behind me. I can focus 100 per cent on my football and I have a good feeling about this season. "Players like Robbie and Michael Owen are known as some of the best strikers Liverpool has ever had and it's good for me to be able to have the chance to join those names. I want to be seen as a Liverpool goalscorer, and now I can't wait to show it. "I scored a lot of goals in Holland, but England is totally different because it's so much more difficult. I believe I can do here what I did in Holland, but I also think I can do more for the team than just score goals. It's important for me to do whatever job is asked, working hard or making assists. "Last season was different for me, getting used to different partners in attack and also playing against better defenders. The Premier League has some of the best defenders in the world and you need to get used to that, but I'm looking forward to this season even more than last. "Andriy and Fernando are different strikers to Robbie Fowler and Bellamy, so I may play in a different role. Fernando likes to come deeper for the ball, so if I play alongside him there's the chance for me to play higher up the park, which I enjoy. "That's more how I was used to playing with Feyenoord. It all depends who I play alongside, of course, but what's most important is to play, win the games and help as many players as possible to score goals." Kuyt's lack of goals in pre-season was partly down to the officials not seeing his perfectly valid effort cross the line against Feyenoord on Sunday. "I thought it was a great goal," he added. "But then I looked to the side and saw the referee and linesman didn't have a good view. "It was disappointing it didn't count, but it's better for that to happen now than in a few weeks. "I didn't have a lot of luck in pre-season. I feel really sharp and think I've been playing well and getting into good positions, but at times I've been unfortunate. "In the game against Portsmouth in Hong Kong I came up against David James making a lot of good saves. Maybe I'm keeping the goals for the real competition. I'm sure the goals will come. "Pre-season is important, but it's all about the game against Aston Villa, so I'd rather score and win that match than score in the practice games."

The Dutch striker, who had a goal ruled out during extra time for offside, beat Petr Cech from twelve yards to spark scenes of ecstasy at Anfield as the Reds booked their place in Athens on May 23.

Kuyt admits it's a dream to be preparing for a Champions League final at the end of his first season at Liverpool - but now he says the Reds must overcome one last hurdle before they can truly begin their celebrations.

"Liverpool is a top European club and I came here to win trophies," he said. "This is one of the biggest and I'm very pleased to have this happen in my first year here. Now we just have to win it.

"The noise for the penalties from the crowd was unbelievable. Pepe Reina did his the job for us but so did the crowd. You always have to be a bit lucky but we deserved to win.

"We played a really good game and the only thing Chelsea did was play long balls. We always controlled the game even if one or two times they were dangerous with Drogba.

"I wasn't nervous before my penalty. Actually I had no nerves at all. They had missed two penalties so I just had to take my responsibility. I just chose a corner."

He added: "If Manchester United reach the final it would be another great game like these two against Chelsea. I watched the final against Milan two years ago and it was unbelievable. It was a great match, a historic match. After seeing that it is very good we are again heading to the final."

Kuyt ready for United test

Dirk Kuyt feels Liverpool have the confidence to beat Premiership leaders Manchester United.

The Reds have not beaten their arch-rivals in the league in almost three years and lost 2-0 at Old Trafford back in October.

That display was among Liverpool's worst of the season and Kuyt is aware of the need to show a big improvement in Saturday's return at Anfield.

But, buoyed by last week's UEFA Champions League win over Barcelona, the Dutch striker is relishing the chance to put the record straight.

"I think we owe a performance after Old Trafford," Kuyt told the Liverpool Echo.

"That was a disappointing time and we definitely want a better result at Anfield this time.

"It would be a great result for us if we could do it. We just need to go and approach the game as we've done in the last week.

"If you can beat a side like Barcelona with players of the quality of Messi and Ronaldinho, you know you can beat a lot of teams.

"We've come back from Barcelona and done a good job at the weekend with a win and a clean sheet, and now we want to beat United.

"We've beaten Chelsea at home and Barcelona away, so now we can have confidence to progress by beating Manchester United.

"It's one of the most important games you can play in the season, so no one can be thinking about Barcelona until after this game.

"There would be nothing better than beating United."

Dirk Kuyt admits he and his teammates owe the fans a big performance against Manchester United on Saturday to make amends for their disappointing defeat at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

The Reds lost 2-0 in October and Kuyt believes a vintage display is required to banish the painful memories.

"I think we owe a performance after Old Trafford. That was a disappointing time and we definitely want a better result at Anfield this time," said the Dutchman.

"It would be a great result for us if we could do it. We just need to go and approach the game as we've done in the last week.

"If you can beat a side like Barcelona with players of the quality of Messi and Ronaldinho, you know you can beat a lot of teams.

Kuyt will face friend and Dutch teammate Edwin van der Sar, who he ranks as the best keeper in the world.

"It will be particularly good for me to play against Edwin," said Kuyt. "He's a legend in Holland and if you can score against him, you can score against anyone in the world."

Dirk Kuyt has revealed what he and his teammates have been getting up to during their five-day training camp in Portugal.

In a diary piece for icons.com, the Dutchman admitted the lads were having a great time preparing for next week's Champions League clash with Barca.

He said: "I'm in Portugal at a training camp with Liverpool at the moment. We haven't got a game until next Wednesday so the boss has brought us away for five days to do some training and team-building.

"We're training in the morning, and then in the afternoon we'll have a game of golf, play some cards and have a meal with the lads in the evening. "It's a great chance for everyone to get to know each other better, particularly for people like me who are in our first season at the club.

"It's also a good chance for me to improve my golf! I don't have a handicap, but I reckon I would play off about 22. It's not something I played much before, but the lads at Liverpool play all the time and some of them are pretty good.

"So I'm taking lessons now. I play every week and go to a driving range because I'm determined to get better. I like to win at everything I do, and golf is no different. I'll let you know how I get on."

Kuyt also spoke about his love of Liverpool and the Anfield faithful.

"To have the respect of the supporters is great. It has really helped me settle in," he said.

"I'm so lucky. When I was at Feyenoord, I had the greatest fans in Holland behind me, and now I'm at Liverpool I think we have the best fans in England.

"The support they give us is unbelievable, I've never known anything like it.

"What honours me most is that when we played Arsenal in the Carling Cup, it was a horrible night, it was cold, it was raining, and of course it's a lot of money to come and watch. But it was sold out!"

The striker has inspired several Kuyt-related songs since his arrival in the summer, but he admits there is one that has stuck out.

"I've heard the song the fans sing for me, too: Put your hands up for Dirk Kuyt. I want to thank every one of them for that. To have the respect of the supporters is great. It has really helped me settle in. It was a great song already and now I like it even more!"

Kuyt also revealed he and his teammates are feeling confident of progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite the quality of next week's opposition.

He said: "What a game it is, away to Barcelona. We will have to improve on our performance against Newcastle, for sure.

"I believe we drew the best team in the Champions League when we got Barcelona, they are the champions after all, but I also believe we can beat them.

"It's always good to play against the best teams, and if you want to win the trophy you have to beat the strongest teams at some stage.

"We're lucky that we have the second leg at Anfield, and when we get them back there we will have the incredible Anfield crowd behind us."

After getting to half time level, West Ham were stung by Dirk Kuyt's superb opener just ten seconds after the start of the second half.

Birthday boy Peter Crouch doubled the lead soon after with a sublime finish capping off a fine Liverpool passing move and The Reds were in total control.
On-loan striker Kepa Blanco scored with his first touch to get West Ham back into it 12 minutes from time, but it was never going to be enough to get them a vital point.

A terrific Liverpool performance saw them coast to a 2-0 win over a very poor Chelsea at Anfield.
From the off the home side looked far hungrier and their attacking approach was rewarded with a fourth minute lead as Dirk Kuyt struck.
Before 20 minutes had gone, Liverpool's domination told again as Jermaine Pennant's struck his first goal for the club and that proved enough for Rafa Benitez - as he claimed his first league victory over Jose Mourinho.
It was a rampant first half display from Liverpool that saw them set up victory as they totally over-ran a Chelsea side which looked completely disorganised without talismanic skipper John Terry in defence.
The main talking point before the game was Petr Cech's return and he was happy to claim a Steven Gerrard header after three minutes to get his first touch of a ball for over three months.
However, within a minute Cech's next task was to pick the ball out of the back of the net as Liverpool swept into the lead. A long ball flicked on by Peter Crouch fell for Kuyt, he knocked the ball past hapless make-shift centre-half Paulo Ferreira, before coolly side-footing a half-volley into the corner.
Chelsea just could not come to terms with Liverpool's attacking play and the home side should have been two-up just moments later. Xabi Alonso's excellent ball into the box freed John Arne Riise - but Cech was down wonderfully well to make the save.
Chelsea's first meaningful chance came for Didier Drogba from a corner but he headed wide - and within minutes they found themselves further behind.
A long ball from Gerrard was headed clear by Michael Essien, the ball fell for Pennant - but with Ashley Cole backing off and inviting a shot, the former Birmingham man accepted the invitation and unleashed a brilliant effort into the top corner leaving Cech helpless.
Shaun Wright-Phillips was soon introduced for the injured Arjen Robben and that resulted in some meaningful Chelsea possession - but Jose Reina remained untested up to half-time.
Liverpool should have had the game well and truly sewn up by the hour mark and it was Crouch the guilty party for missing two great chances.
Pennant, having one of his best games for the club, was the creator for the first opportunity as he whipped in a cross from the right and found Crouch unmarked 12 yards out but he disappointingly headed tamely at Cech.
Then came a double let off for the champions as Riise unleashed a trademark thunderbolt from 30 yards which smashed off the crossbar - the rebound looked to drop favourably for Crouch but under Essien's challenge he failed to find the target.
Chelsea simply were not clicking and Drogba seemed to sum up their day with two fluffed chances from great positioned free-kicks. He first contrived with Michael Ballack - one the edge of the box - to simply give the ball straight to the home side.
Then he was picked out brilliantly by Lampard from a set piece on the right just inside the box - but he missed the ball completely with his side foot.
Wright-Phillips was just about Chelsea's best player after entering the fray earlier in the first half and his mazy run through the Liverpool backline almost resulted in a goal as he crossed from the by-line and Dan Agger was relieved to see the ball fly into the side-netting rather than the back of the net.
An excellent late intervention from Ferreira prevented Kuyt adding a third - but Mourinho could have had few complaints had Liverpool, as they should have, secured a more sizeable success.
Indeed Kuyt spurned an even better chance in the final minute when he blazed over from 10 yards after a wonderful flicked pass from Gerrard.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol expects Liverpool fans to see the best of Dirk Kuyt in 2007 now his compatriot is settling into the Premiership.

Kuyt, 26, arrived at Anfield in the summer from Feyenoord - a year after he was linked with a move to Spurs - but has only six goals to his name so far this season.
Jol believes Holland striker Kuyt, like all foreign layers, take a few months to settle before fully adjusting to English football.
It is a situation Jol found himself in with Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgaria striker who suffered a slow start to his career with Spurs but has now hit double figures.
Berbatov's partnership with Jermain Defoe has helped Spurs reach seventh in the table and they could go level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool with a win against Kuyt's side on Saturday at White Hart Lane.
"When I think of Liverpool, I think of Dirk Kuyt as well," said Dutchman Jol.
"They have the same as we have with all these options up front, Dirk is probably like Berbatov.
"Berbatov has shown everyone he is a good buy but Dirk Kuyt has shown that too, and it is not easy when you come over to England."
He added: "I think Berbatov did fine, as a foreign player it's always a difficult job and the same applied for Dirk Kuyt."
Jol has previously described Kuyt as a player who could score 20 goals and set up another 20 with assists, although he believes that target has to be revised this season.
"I said Kuyt is a 20-20 player. I still feel that but it won't be easy because we've had half of the season and he might be a 10-10 player - but you will see that he is so honest," added Jol.
"He's probably not a player who can beat four men in a row but he is so good, so versatile and in Holland he is one of the best players."
Jol took his side to the brink of the Champions League places last season but going one better this season will mean breaking into the traditional big four of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
In Spurs' favour is playing three of those four teams at home in the second half of the season, starting with the clash against Liverpool.
Rafael Benitez's side have struggled away from home and from being outside contenders for the title they are now outside the top four and will face a Spurs side who have won their last 12 matches at White Hart Lane.
Jol, however, is full of admiration for Benitez, and said of the Spaniard: "If you can lift the Champions League as a manager that must be the best feeling ever in football. And he did that.
"If you saw his record before in Valencia, there aren't a lot of managers in the world who have done better than that."
Benitez's famous rotation policy was questioned earlier this season but Jol himself believes there are inevitable changes in selection when faced with injuries.
"But that is English," said Jol. "If a player is out they talk about rotation. If I have players out injured and I play another player, they say 'he's rotating' but they don't know what the situation is."
